Trash? No your treasure!

by Melissa Lewis on February 19, 2008

The weather finally perked up on Sunday, so I thought I would hit the local flea market. My normal thrifty partner was MIA (on a mini-vacation with her children in Nashville) so I hi-jacked my mom and we headed out the door. Unfortunately, we didn’t go until the last day and mid-afternoon for that matter, so most vendors were closing up shop. However, I did manage to find some cool pieces. I love to find things and use them for something they were not intended for, to incorporate fine little details in my home. These brooches and earrings really caught my eye. I just couldn’t pass them up, especially for such a crazy good deal. And if you no me at all, I have an obsession with all things turquoise! Really, it’s true.

I knew exactly what I would do with them when I saw them. I came home and got out my tools and supplies. I just plugged away, for all of five minutes, and now I have a beautiful set of magnets for my fridge and push pins for my inspiration board.

You can do it too!

Look around the house for things you already have. Maybe some.. earrings you never wear anymore, brooches or pins that look old or maybe lost a stone, decorative items included in gift packaging you may have received from someone. All you need to do this is:

  • some magnets ( I got mine from the dollar store, you can also get them at any craft store)
  • a set of pliers ( I have sometimes just used scissors)
  • glue gun or super glue
  • some push pins

Use the pliers to pry the pin off the back of the brooch. If you want to make it a magnet, you simply glue a magnet on the back. If you want to use it as a push pin, you glue the pin to the back. Be sure to let it set for a while so it can have time to dry all the way. If you are using a pair of earrings, no need to do anything, just push them in your inspiration board, and be inspired!

Hope you enjoyed this. Please let me know if you were able to make this work for you!

xoxo
