Flock Wallpapers, A Luxury To Be Seen By All.

Lately, I have developed such an interest in wallpapers. As a faux finisher by day, Jaime and I work with decorators a lot, and I have noticed wallpapers making a come back in the interiors of home. As I began looking around at all the different kinds, I stumbled upon a type of wallpaper called Flock Wallpaper. I am amazed at the designs and prints I have been seeing. Julie over at Perfect Bound wrote about some papers she was considering for herself over at Romo Fabrics. Another place to look for great Flock designs is Graham & Brown.

What is flocking?

Flock paper was originally invented to imitate cut-velvet hangings. A flocked finish imparts a decorative and/or functional characteristic to the surface that looks and feels like velvet. Historians claim that flocking can be traced back to circa 1000BC, when the Chinese used resin glue to bond natural fibers to fabrics. Fiber dust was strewn onto adhesive coated surfaces to produce flocked wall coverings in Germany during the middles ages. In France, flocked wall coverings became popular during the reign of Louis XIV.

Are you interested in wallpapers, but not sure how or where to use them in your home?

The dining room is often a great place for wallpaper. Because this is usually a more formal room in the home, wallpaper can add a lot to this room with out look too busy. Another great room for this would be the powder room or guest bath. These rooms are often the smallest in the home and can be used for more of a dramatic effect.

Melissa, I am really getting interested in some new wallpapers too & those big damask prints really call my name. Just not sure where i’d like to commit to them right now, but I sure to love the look!

I just saw a photo of a bedroom done in a black and white flocked paper with a red ceiling and white furniture and accessories. It looked great!

I’ve noticed the wallpaper come back too. My grandmother used flocked paper when I was a child. I love it but it is a big commitment. Not sure I’m ready. Wonderful post! Your blog site just keeps getting better and better.

I LOVE flocked wallpapers!! We have about forty samples in our office (I keep trying to use them but no takers yet!). My favorites are the metallic backgrounds with the brightly colored damask or floral designs. Great post!

How funny! In our rental home in Hampton, VA (about 10 years ago) the only room that was wallpapered was the bathroom. In flocked paper! In BLACK flocked wallpaper! I thought it was so horrible at the time, but it’s looking a lot better to me these days!
