Today, Bart and I celebrate five years of marriage! Wow, it’s funny because I can’t believe five years has already gone by, yet it seems like I have known him forever. Before I met Bart, I wondered if God had marriage in His plan for me.
Throughout my life, I struggled with not ever feeling good enough. Without getting into the long story of it all, I always felt unworthy of the truly great things in life that everyone else deserved. God has taught me A LOT, and most importantly shown me that I was wrong… way wrong. As a child of God, I don’t ever have to worry about actually being good enough. And though I wasn’t worthy, my God loved me so much, that His one and only son died for me. Crazy right?!?!?
God also knew what He was doing when he brought me a husband. He has shown me so much about how He loves me through Bart. It was, and still is, as if God is revealing a side of Himself to me that I did not know before Bart. When Bart seeks the best for me, when He protects me, when He fights for me, when he cares and comforts me… this is all just a fraction of what God feels for me!
Working with teenage girls, I hear some of them talk often about how they just want to be done with school, get married and have kids. I tell them that marriage is really the best thing they could ever imagine all wrapped up with the hardest thing they can ever do. It takes a lot of work! When God spoke of dying to ourselves, I believe he also meant that to be true in marriage. I don’t mean that we lose our identity and completely change the person we are, but we desire to always make our spouse feel honored, cherished, chased after, and loved above all others.
Thank you God for creating Bart for me. Thank you for creating the marriage relationship as an example to us of your love.
Thank you to my wonderful husband, whom I completely adore, for loving me unconditionally, always chasing after me, and for challenging me to grow as a women of God. You are an inspiration to me daily! I love you. Happy Anniversary!

Awwww, Melissa! Congrats on 5 years. Me and my hubby are getting ready to celebrate #3. We both have been through a lot and are glad that God put us together too. Your story sounds so sweet and I’m so glad that you waited for God’s best for you. That’s something that girls need to learn today. You are so right about marriage being great and challenging all at the same time. Our pastor did a wonderful sermon last week on the Ephesian passage, wives respecting and husbands loving. It was so good! He brought out the fact that marriage is a picture of God’s plan for the world, a wonderful sermon.
Thanks for coming by & I hope ya’ll have a great anniversary!

Rhoda

Melissa, reading this made me feel so happy for you. A wonderful marriage is truly one of life’s greatest comforts.
I have the perfect husband for me, too. We will celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary later this year. He is everything I could ever desire.
Your Bart is a very lucky man.

Rhoda, thank you so much for the sweet words. I love that passage of scripture. Have you read the book Love & Respect? It is based on that scripture and it is amazing! Me and Bart highly recommend it:)
Beverly, 38 years! Wow, that’s amazing. You are too sweet:)

I love your spirit of gratitude and I feel as you do about marriage. We’re celebrating our 20th in July. Never a dull moment, love, tears, fights and passion and so much growth in both of us.

Thanks so much everyone for all the kind words and well wishes. We have a newer home which has no tress. So we planted two trees yesterday. I had no idea that for 5 years, you’re supposed to give the gift of wood. That worked out well:)
