Make Your Floor A Statement Piece

by Melissa Lewis on August 25, 2008

Recently, I did a post featuring a painted floor I saw featured on Design Sponge. I was immediately drawn to the unique design of the pattern. Oh, how I would love to have a floor like this one in my home somewhere. Better yet, while I’m dreaming, how about a studio in the back with this floor. Oh, I would just be creatively inspired every day!

Since this post, I have seen painted floors everywhere. You all might think I am crazy, but I am instantly drawn to this. Maybe it’s the cottage feel it instantly brings to a room.

I have been endlessly going through my mounds of magazines, tearing out sheets I have earmarked. I found this one I had saved from at least a year or so ago. This was before I realized my obsession with painted wood floors.

The most common style for painting on the floor is the harlequin or diamond pattern. You can use two different colors of paint, as shown in the first picture, or you can opt for leaving the stain showing and using a darker stain for the second color as shown in the Southern Living kitchen.

“Painted floors are a cottage favorite for many reasons: They’re easy to maintain, they cover up a multitude of flaws, and they add a light and cheerful quality to any room. ” - Jessica Shapard of Cottage Living

You all know what I think about painted floors. And the wear and tear that would come along with this with age makes it that much better to me.

How do you feel about this look? Do you dare paint on hardwood?

I love painted floors. I would hesitate if my floors were in good condition because I don’t like to create more work for myself. But if they were ugly or not in great shape, this is the PERFECT solution!

Happy night,
Melissa

In our last home, we painted my daughters old wood floor (we refinished the others in the house). We did big 18 inch squares, of a greyed green, and a lighter green. at corners every three feet we stenciled on berry colored stars. It was really beautiful. Everyone always commented!

Makes my feet want to skip and play jacks on that floor!
They bring a child-like whimsy!

I would be nervous to paint my floors but I do LOVE the white-washed look.

I do love the painted floors…however, for some reason it scares me for my own home.

I love the look but would never do my floors. I would opt to refinish when they need it. However, I don’t hesitate to paint wood furniture or wood moldings etc…

It does tend to be a scary thing to do. Maybe just a deck for starters?

Never realized how much I liked painted floors until now — the harlequin pattern of the second and third images and the amazing pattern in the final photo have completely convinced me.

I think they are beautiful, but I would not choose to paint my hardwood floor. Maybe because I waited so long to acquire it. I think it is beautiful just as it is. :)

Neutral Dwelling, yes, for a lot of people they are beautiful floors in “other peoples” homes:)

Love your blog! As far as painting my floors, I don’t think I would have the nerve, but I love seeing them done for someone else!
Loved all the pictures of floors done so handsomely. The kitchen from Southern Accents I recognized was designed by my friend Frank Babb Randolph of DC……….one of favorite designers!…….Thanks!

These are really beautiful rooms. I agree with your commenter above who lacks the nerve to paint floors-lol.

I’m in the same boat but I still admire the beautiful floors that others’ create. Hmmm, maybe one day.

Great photo selections.
