In all things creative there is always a process. Sometimes I don't make time for that process. I've learned that as a creative person, if I'm going too long without creating, a part of me just isn't right.
But we have to make time for the process. Can you think of any aspect of creating that doesn't involve more than one step? Sure, maybe there are those out there that can totally have a vision and get it perfectly into fruition in one swoop, but I haven't met that person.
So I've come to love the process. It stretches me. I balances me. And sometimes, most importantly, it challenges me. I always come out of the end of it having learned something, having grown, being better for it.
Jaime and I have been faux finishing together for (ahem... ahem...) a long time. And so many times our sweet clients would get a bit antsy or even fearful in the beginning of our job and we would explain to them that there are quit a few steps involved in the art of what we were doing. They had to trust our process.
I've found the same to be true with our prints and designs in our Etsy Shop. Rarely do I have a sketch that I can lay down at once and call it done. I erase and re-draw. I paint and then I may want it a different way so I repaint. I may edit the mess-ups in photoshop. I keep working at it until I can feel that its complete.
Sometimes the things that are most worth it are the hardest and the most challenging. Sometimes the things that are really really beautiful take a lot of steps to get that way. Most of the time the process takes us to places where we can look back at our journey and know that we've come through it better.
I've been through quite the process this week myself. Something I've been dealing with, struggling with maybe, my whole life has just now come to a point of completion. I feel like I've just stepped on that very top and final step of the process. Maybe that's why this topic is on my mind. Funny how I can relate almost anything to art and creating.
What are your thoughts on the process? Whether it be art, cooking, crafting, singing, writing or any art of your choice. Do you enjoy the process or feel that its a hinderance you'd rather do without?
